About Us

About Our Small and Large Animal Hospitals

AboutFounded in 1923, Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital has a long history and reputation for providing compassionate, comprehensive, and skilled veterinary care for both small and large animals in the Kern County area. In addition to our feline, canine, and exotic animal care services, we are also well-known throughout Kern County for our skilled equine and large animal care. We are dedicated to providing all animals with the highest quality and most modern veterinary medicine, combined with old-fashioned personalized care and service.

Our Comprehensive Services

As animal care professionals, we understand that the best way to provide your pet with a long, happy, and healthy life, while keeping veterinary costs down, is through preventive care. Comprehensive wellness exams, combined with a balanced approach to vaccinations, are the cornerstones of your pet's healthcare at Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital. We also provide thorough dental care, parasite screening, microchip pet identification, a full range of diagnostic and surgical services, and more.

Despite the most advanced care and nurturing, your pet may still develop an illness or be injured. Our internal medicine, advanced diagnostics, surgical expertise, and in-house veterinary laboratory, ensure that your pet will receive a quick and accurate diagnosis followed by the proper treatment. We always discuss your pet's medical diagnosis and the treatment options with you, before we continue with our healthcare plan.

Skilled and Dedicated Veterinary Team

Over the years, our hospital has been home to many veterinarians who have been recognized throughout the San Joaquin Valley for their skill and dedication to the well-being of animals both large and small. As a part of our unwavering commitment to animal welfare, we are continuously expanding our scope of veterinary knowledge. Our veterinarians work hard to continue their educational efforts in a variety of different fields in order to adapt to the ever-changing needs of our patients with ease.

In addition, the veterinarians and staff at Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital believe that our medical expertise and love for animals is of little use if we do not share that with you. We work closely with you to understand your pet's unique health needs, develop a customized wellness plan, and ensure you have the knowledge required to be a responsible, loving caregiver. When you come for a visit with your pet, we listen to your concerns and provide you with the latest information about your type and breed of pet. It is our goal not just to ensure the health and well-being of your pet, but to be your partner in strengthening the bond you share.

State-of-the-Art Facility for All Your Veterinary Needs

A large part of our success is our huge family of loyal clients. Thanks to our ever-growing client family, we expanded our business and our services in 2008, when we combined our small animal locations on Chester Avenue and Wible Road in an over 13,000 square foot hospital on Harris Road. Since then, we have proudly offered our patients and clients spacious lobby areas (with freshly brewed coffee 24 hours a day and a special children's waiting area with toys), large dog runs/play areas, state-of-the art surgical and exam rooms, luxury boarding suites, a comprehensive laboratory, a complete veterinary pharmacy, and other medical assets — all in a calm, welcoming atmosphere for you and your pets. We also provide the Kern County community with 24-hour small animal emergency care, with doctors on-site during all hours.

AboutVeterinary Services for Equines and Large Animals

Along with our small animal services, Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital is the leading provider of equine veterinary services in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. We provide high quality care and diagnostic workups in the following areas: preventive medicine, internal medicine, lameness, reproduction, neonatal care, dentistry, podiatry, and elective soft tissue surgery. We have three ambulatory veterinary units, ultrasounds for reproductive/diagnostic sonograms, and a full-service digital radiology, endoscopic, and surgery facility.

While equine medicine is our main focus, Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital is also pleased to offer a range of services to local farms with food-producing and companion animals. Being able to offer quality large animal and equine services to area farms and families means that we are living up to our desire to be a complete veterinary practice.

Old-Fashioned Service and Modern Medicine for All Kern County Animals

Our staff understands the importance of "old fashioned" values and hopes to be a source of inspiration to future generations of veterinarians. We are committed to keeping pace with the newest technology and treatment modalities while maintaining our long-standing tradition of excellent animal health care. Our small animal hospital has been accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) since 1984, and both hospitals are owned by Dr. Charles P. Ulrich, Dr. Jennifer Aguirre, Dr. Irene Takata, Dr. Mike Keese, and Dr. John Tolley.
